IN 1959 FOUR brothers
from the South end of Columbus, Ohio started singing Christmas
Carols on Christmas morning as the oldest brother Ruey played
chords on a toy ukulele. The extended family was overwhelmed
as they were suddenly listening to a unique sound of harmonies.
Yes, that day was the beginning of the sound and careers of
the Rhodes Brothers.
With the support of their relatives, neighbors
and friends the Rhodes Brothers decided to take a wild chance
at show business.
The Rhodes Brothers, Mike Douglas
& Nancy Wilson |
They bought guitars, a set of drums, banjo’s
and a stand up bass. With determination, hard work and a dream,
within a few years they appeared on the Merv Griffin Show,
the Tonight with Johnny Carson Show, 21 Mike Douglas Shows
and traveled throughout the United States and the Caribbean
appearing at the finest Hotels and Casinos. While the Rhodes
Brothers were booked on, but never appeared on the Ed Sullivan
Show because Ed’s show was cancelled the week the brothers
were to appear, Ruey, Tom, John and Eddie were opening act
for superstars such as Bob Hope, Jackson Five, the Commodores,
Dick Clark and Alan King, just to name a few.
The early death of the oldest brother Ruey
changed the direction of their careers, but it didn’t
stop them. The live performances of Tom, John and Ed continued
to bring an excitement and friendliness that is rarely seen
on stage. The Rhodes Brothers just seemed to have what people
now call (IT). What ever it was, their shows uplifted the
spirits of their audiences every time. If you wanted your
entertainment medium or well done, the four and then three
Rhodes Brothers were neither, they were hot and tastefully
rare! Experiencing a show with the guys was a special treat.
This website will take some of you back
to those ‘good ole days’ and for others it will
introduce you to some new fun. There will be Bios
on each brother, a Flashback
Gallery page and what would a web site
be without a Memorable
Story page. You will also find a You
& Us page for friends and fans.
We have super and exciting plans for the
new web site Store.
Fresh out of the archives, a DVD documentary made in 1970
by Chuck Zink of WTVJ in Miami, a 15 song CD featuring all
four of the Rhodes Brothers, embroidery polo shirts, T-shirts
and hats with the signature logo ‘Rhodes Brothers.’
